An Interview with Faye Smith | AURA MIND & BODY - AURA Nutrition

Faye is a Vancouver based entrepreneur and award-winning style leader. Working with celebrities privately, and on set, alwaysΒ bringing her signature style.

She shared with AURA her struggles and evolution of becoming a leader of people, building a business, and what's next in life, love, passions.

Faye is the founder ofΒ @fayesmithagencyΒ &Β @primpandpropervancouver. Β

AURA - Share with me something about yourself that you're working on improving, and how you think itΒ will be better/more productive/run more smoothly once you've accomplished your goal.

FAYE - I am currently working on being a better leader. Working as a self-employed makeup and hair artist for so long has led me to be a fantastic independent worker, but being a boss is something I am not good at and must get better at in order to strengthenΒ my business and grow my company. Developing my communication skills is key, as well as learning how to deal with confrontation and uncomfortable situations professionally and effectively. This is what I will be working on over the next year.

AURA - What did your parents do, how did they influence you, and what lessons have you held onto?

FAYE - My mother was an award-winning, celebrity hairstylist (Duran Duran were her regulars), and manager of a top Birmingham hair salon at a young age. Much like me, she got into the world of work early on in life,Β aged 14 when she got her first job in a hair salon sweeping up hair and cleaning the work-stations. In her early twenties, she gave up her own career to be a full-time mother, wife and secretary and advisor for my father's company. My mother advises me never to give up your own passion so I will likely listen to that advice. My Dad owned his own business and went through all of the struggles and triumphs that business owners go through. Both of my parents have been wonderful influences in my life and I certainly wish we lived in the same country so they could be here for me during my journey in business.

AURA - Describe your biggest obstacles in life and how you’ve mastered them.

FAYEΒ - Trying to figure out my work-life balance. As a business owner, this most often feels impossible and at age 30 and 10 years into running myΒ business, I still struggle with this. I have not yet mastered it but I am working on it by hiring the right people to help me, confiding in friends and family and prioritizing myself with regards to exercise, my social life and learning how to shut off from work after a more human amount of hours in a day.

AURA - What is your vision for the future for you personally and professionally? Maybe add some thoughts on where you hope the world will go.

FAYE - My vision for the future of my business is that it will be able to run without me more. I would love to be able to work on my art, travel and check in on the beautiful business I have built. I am getting married next year and will likely start growing my family shortly after, so I am currently setting up for the next chapter of life. Life has many amazing chapters and I believe this is going to be the biggest, most beautiful and possibly the scariest yet. I am excited for the new challenges this chapter will bring.Β
